Dance at the Grammy's - Part Two

Hey everybody,

Jade's given you her take on the Grammy situation - now's my turn.

First, let's be real: Awards shows never award the best music, the best movies, the best TV shows... whatever. For every big-name project that gets tons of recognition, a million smaller artists fly under the radar. Remember, a lot of the dance artists that we think of as "commercial" are still total strangers to the mainstream awards shows. Um, how else to explain that JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE won BEST DANCE RECORDING for "SEXY BACK"??

Look, I like that song, and yeah... I guess I've danced to it a few times, too. But that doesn't make it a dance song! Follow the logic with me on this one:
  1. Former member of a POP boy band decides to go solo.
  2. To sell more records, he brings in guest rappers and urban producers for HIP HOP street cred.
  3. He wins a DANCE award.

Uhh... something seem fishy to anyone else?

Like I said, I think it's a cool song... but a dance song? Let's look at the other nominees who went home empty-handed, shall we?:

Rock Your Denim - 25% Off Select Styles

  • "Suffer Well" Depeche Mode
  • "Ooh La La " Goldfrapp
  • "Get Together "Madonna
  • "I'm With Stupid" Pet Shop Boys

Now, I'm already a little iffy with Madonna being on this list. I think of her as pop. But I'm open-minded, and I get that the boundaries should always be blurred. "Get Together" is indeed an awesome song, it's a dance song, and I'll give her points for being a genre innovator. Okay, fine. (By the way, you'll see the fine people of DIVA DIVO also included it in their "Top 20 Dance Songs Since 2000" list. Check that out on the main page and let 'em know what you think. I've already voted for several that I thought were left off!)

Anyway, ANY ONE of the other songs would have been a better choice than Justin. At least they're in the right general category! Personally, I probably would have given the Grammy to Goldfrapp, out of that list. I'm a fan, just don't tell Jade.

Oh well... at least we've got the Winter Music Conference coming up at the end of the month, and IDMA (International Dance Music Awards). I'm sure Jade and I will have fun picking apart their nominees over the next few weeks!

Okay, your turn. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about the Grammys. I'm curious.

Signing off for now,

JOHNNY DIVO

PS. I'll be at Avalon Boston tonight with Jade. And she forgot to mention that in addition to David Guetta spinning, it's the club's ninth anniversary of AVALAND (their Friday club night). Come on, Jade, get with the program!

And no, David Guetta never did call us back. Like so many men that Jade has known... (oh shit, I'm in trouble now!! :) )
