Yeah, yeah. I know it's sort of a bullshit awards show, a lot of industry back-patting and politics. And I know that they barely deal with dance music at all. (At least we have the WMC next month!) But they did give out two dance awards, and I think it's only fair that we all grab a cup of coffee, sit down for a moment, and TAWK about this. What did you think of the winners???
Let's start with the nominees for BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE ALBUM:
- Goldfrapp "Supernature"
- Madonna "Confessions on a Dancefloor" (winner)
- Oakenfold "A Lively Mind"
- Pet Shop Boys "Fundamental"
- Zero 7 "The Garden"
Confessions won, and I was glad to see it. I know a lot of people don't think of Madonna as a "dance artist," but in many ways... she's one of the first! Don't forget, the girl made a name for herself in the NYC discos, shopping her demos around and basically turning her club-girl dream of superstardom into reality. Can't scoff at that! Plus she's been one of the mainstream pop world's only ongoing supporters of dance music... she blazed a trail in getting dance-pop on the radio... and also... she's frickin' Madonna!
As for the other nominees... Zero 7 didn't really do the trick for me. I mean, the CD has "electronic elements," but would you really call it electronica??
I did like Oakenfold's album, but it sounds kind of dated. I didn't really think it showed a progression in his music. Good, but more of the same. Same with Pet Shop Boys. I dunno, I liked them and all... but they didn't excite me.
And Goldfrapp? Okay, don't everyone go for the throat at once, but I find Goldrapp totally overrated. Sorry! And have you read any of Alison Goldfrapp's interviews? Oh my God, she's so full of herself! You'd think she was the Second Coming of Dance Music, the way she talks. So yes, I took a little bit of vicarious pleasure in seeing her lose. Of course, I'm sure it's because we Americans don't understand her aht, dahling. Hehe.
So there you have it, Madonna wins by default. Well, that and the fact that the CD is awesome... it hasn't left my car in the past year. My personal fave is "Isaac," if anyone cares. That middle-eastern rhythm, and the way it sort of segues right into an explosive dance track? Love it!
Okay, before carpal tunnel takes over, I'm going to get going and let Johnny discuss his view on the other major Dance award. But leave me some love, some comments, and let me know who YOU think should have won! I'll check in throughout the day :)
Lots of love!,
JADE
PS. Me and Johnny are going to Avalon Boston tonight to see David Guetta spin! Check out the review of his new CD on the site... I didn't write it, but I totally agree. I love it! Personally, I think it has an 80s sound, which I'm really into. But then again, what would you expect from someone who's hangover cure is bed, cold pizza, and a Molly Ringwald movie fest all morning? "Pretty in Pink," what would I do without thee??
Still, I'm a little miffed at Mr. Guetta. Well, not him, exactly. But we emailed his publicist for an interview on DIVA DIVO, and she never even got back to us! Biatch. I mean, I'm used to men not returning phone calls, but this...!
Well anyway, it should be a good time. I'll let you all know in the AM. And my fellow Bostonians... maybe I'll see you on the floor tonight!
